Green Hackathon
VSB-TUO Ostrava I November 21-23, 2022
The event was organized as a kickoff event of the ExCORE project.
Is it possible to write a research paper in 48 hours? Possibly not in a quality that would be accepted by acknowledged journals. It is no easy task to write an extended abstract of such a paper if its authors are from different countries (who have never met before) and the topic of the paper is not given in advance. Despite all of the above, a group of young researchers from 3 countries – Poland, Slovakia, and Czechia was challenged to form international teams and produce the extended abstract in 2 days during a hackathon-style event organized by VSB-TUO Ostrava (CZ).
New ideas, innovations or inspirations are hard to come by sitting at home or being stuck to the humdrum of daily life. So the aim of the event was to gather young researchers from different fields and universities and show them places and meet people they usually don’t encounter, such as experts in mining activities who help to remove the environmental burdens of coal mining and support the local business infrastructure (Jeremenko mine and Moravian Silesian Industrial Development agency, Dolni Vitkovice area), visit the state of the art fully automated production line that is part of transition to Industry 4.0, or enter a smart home full of analytical sensors (Smart lab of VSB – Technical University of Ostrava).
To get better results, the Project Leaders and Mentors (senior researchers from partner Universities) decided to define the rules for writing the extended abstract and presenting outcomes twice during the event and, above all, decided to set a 48-hour deadline so that the participants could experience work under pressure.
Then, our recipe for the event followed verified procedures e.g. icebreakers, good food (Czech classics combined with an overload of pizza), and a game of bowling that helped in shaping the team spirit and allowed for a moment of respite.
The teams had to define the specific goal of their research, and draft an extended abstract of their future research paper to be submitted during the next year either to a conference or a scientific journal. The abstract also covered a review of existing literature, a proposal of research methods and the way how to obtain data for later analysis, as well as a description on the motivation and further use of expected findings.
Final presentations took place on Day 3 when the teams faced immediate feedback and questions from the project Mentors. The presented abstracts (5-7 pages) exceeded the expectations of both the participants and their Mentors, in means and quality, considering they were international collaboration in newly formed teams of people that have never met before and had to use English as the language of communication.

Southampton Study Visit
with the participation in 3rd Accounting & Accountability in Emerging Economies (AAEE) Conference l July 2-4, 2023
The Conference was organized by Southampton Business School, Centre for Research in Accounting, Accountability and Governance (CRAAG), supported by Centre for Accountability and Global Development, University of Essex.
The ExCORE project participants presented their papers in the session “Emerging Scholars Colloquium”, that is traditionally organized during the first day of the AAEE Conference, in support of young researchers.
Young researchers took part in on-site mentoring session with prof. Teerooven Soobaroyen, who provided comments on their research projects.
University of Bari Aldo Moro
project meeting
with the participation in 10th European Risk Conference of ERRN (European Risk Research Network) l September 26-29, 2023
The first project meeting took place in Bari. During the meeting, young researchers had a chance to move forward with their projects and enjoy socialising activities. On September 28, 2023, the participants of the project attended the 10th European Risk Conference, organized by the European Risk Research Network (https://errn.ue.katowice.pl/) and the University of Bari Aldo Moro. On the first day of the conference, during the Emerging Scholar Colloquium session, the young researchers had the opportunity to present their work, which summarized the progress made so far within the ExCORE project. Following each presentation, the young researchers were able to discuss the results of their work and receive insightful feedback and guidance from project’s mentors, as well as from other conference participants.
University of Verona
project meeting
Frebruary 19-22, 2024
From February 19 to 22, 2024, a secind project meeting took place at the University of Verona, organized by Prof. Cristina Florio and Prof. Francesca Rossignoli. The participants of the ExCORE project were welcomed by Prof. Roberta Capitello, Coordinator for Internationalization of the Department of Management. This meeting was particularly significant as it was the last opportunity for young researchers to present the progress of their projects and discuss their findings with mentors. During the sessions, each project group discussed the results of their work. This was the final meeting before the concluding conference of the project, which will be organized by the University of Economics in Katowice in May, 2024.
University of Bari
project meeting
with research method workshop l June 17-20, 2024
From June 17 to 20, with the support of University of Bari Aldo Moro, the research methods workshop was held. The aim of the workshop was to enhance the research skills of young researchers. The young scientists participated in various workshops, including those conducted by Prof. Tomasz Ingram on the application of SEM and fsQCA. Additionally, the participants had the opportunity to learn how to use the Refinitiv database, introduced by Prof. Antonio Netti. During the meeting, the young researchers were also introduced to the activities of the Centre for Economics of Climate Change and discussed ideas and opportunities for future research collaboration. The discussion was moderated by prof. Julia Włodarczyk.
